The Hilton Birmingham Metropole
Previous convention members will know that for the last 3 conventions we have used the same hotel. This time the convention committee thought it was time for a change so the hunt was on.
Finding a suitable hotel for the sheer size of our convention was a challenge and the whole team worked hard to find ones with suitable facilities. Lots of research later we had a shortlist and it was time to approach the short listed venues, and arrange visits. We have listened carefully to comments from the membership and taking those and our very specific needs as an event together we assessed our shortlist.
We are delighted that the Hilton Birmingham Metropole is our new venue.
Of course for those who have only been to Discworld conventions at the Hinckley Island will see major changes, new convention attendees will be able to view it all with fresh eyes. Whatever your perspective we feel the Hotel is a good one for the needs of our Convention.
One of the main advantages of the Hilton is that we, at last, have a main function room which is capable of holding the entire membership So everyone who wants to will be able to attend the opening Ceremony/Terry’s Bedtime stories or indeed any of the other exciting events our program team come up with. Our programme team will be busy over the months leading up to the convention, looking at the new rooms and layouts and program opportunities available to them.
Another big advantage of The Hilton is its accessibility.
In the Midlands, close to the motorway network, and on the National Exhibition Centre site, those travelling by car should have no problems finding the hotel and will benefit from our specially negotiated parking rate of only £2.50 per 24 hours in the barrier controlled secure car park. A 24-hour free bus service runs every 30 minutes between Birmingham International Airport, Birmingham International Railway Station and the Hilton Birmingham Metropole hotel. The journey takes 10 minutes.
It will be an interesting experience not having exclusive use of the hotel; although access to program items will naturally be restricted to convention members it is very likely that there will be members of the public in the hotel at the same time as us. However to maintain our special atmosphere we will have our own reserved catering and bar area for Convention members only. A 24 hour lounge operates too so anytime of the day or night you will be able to purchase drinks and food, although special convention rates will apply only in the reserved convention area not in the public areas.
The accommodation and facilities at the Hilton are excellent with a 4 star plus rating. The accommodation is in single, twin and some double and triple rooms. For families the children’s rate is excellent value for money and interconnecting twin rooms are available for family bookings. No quad rooms are available at this hotel.
Another plus for those with young children is that the pool facilities include a toddler’s pool.
