Policies
Weapons
All weapons will be checked in with Operations (Ops) as soon as possible following hotel check-in. There are no exceptions to the check weapons in with Ops
policy. Permission to wear weapons is conditional on the approval of the Watch, in conjunction with Ops, to whom all weapons should be brought.
If you're not sure what constitutes a weapon, you should bring it up to Ops anyway, just to be sure. There are 888 people in close quarters for the duration of the convention, and you'd be amazed at the damage that one person with a scythe can cause. Well, all right, maybe you wouldn't be that surprised, but if Death turns up at the Con, we'd like to think that he'd be thoughtful enough to check his scythe and sword in with Ops.
You may think that a weapon which stays in your room and only comes out for the Masquerade does not need to be brought to Ops. You would be very, very, wrong; ALL weapons need to be brought to Ops, as soon as possible following check-in – it is the experience of the Watch that at two in the morning someone will decide to go up to their hotel room and get their edged banana so that they can show it to their friends.
Please do not do this.
Ops will summon The Watch to examine all weapons brought to their attention. Determination of what constitutes a weapon is at the sole discretion of The Watch and Ops teams. People who disregard the weapons policy may have their Con membership revoked and be asked to leave the Convention.
Please help us help you to have a happy and safe Convention.
Children
Under 18s must be accompanied at the Convention by an adult (specified on their membership application) who will assume legal responsibility for them for the duration of the Convention. Minors are at all times the responsibility of their nominated adult. Star Turtle Ltd assumes no responsibility for minors.
Children under 13 years may attend the Convention free of charge but we MUST have received a valid application form and therefore have assigned a membership number.
Membership
Memberships are sold as non-refundable. If a member discovers that they will be unable to attend, then they may sell their membership to another person as long as Star Turtle Ltd are notified of all of the details so that we can ensure that the new member is now registered with us. There are no physical membership "tickets" so the only proof of membership is registration on our membership database.
Membership resales are possible up to 28 days prior to the start date of the Convention.
Hotel
Hotel bookings are made via the Discworld Convention Website but are held securely with the Birmingham Hilton Metropole Hotel. All amendments, queries and requests should be made via the Convention Hotel Liaison Team.
Bookings made via the Convention may be cancelled with no charge up to 48 hours before arrival. Cancellation after this time may incur charges.
Credit card details are taken to confirm booking only, and no money will be charged until arrival at the hotel. Proof of payment will be requested on check-in, and if paying by credit or debit card a hold may be placed on deposit amounts for settlement on check-out.
Guests may wish to read the Hilton policies which may be found here.
